Who Jesus Is

God's greatest description of Himself is Jesus: He demonstrates God's character and authority, He fulfills God's word and promises, He inaugurates God's Kingdom and new covenant. Since the beginning, everything has been moving to this point of fulfillment. Jesus Christ is the final Word that explains all that has been previously spoken. This is why the gospel is the fixed point of reference for understanding the entire Bible. Therefore, we read and understand all that the Bible says through the singular lens of Jesus Christ.

Graeme Goldsworthy writes, "For the New Testament the interpretation of the Old Testament is not 'literal' but 'Christological.' That is to say that the coming of Christ transforms all the kingdom terms of the Old Testament into gospel reality." Jesus Himself embodies the kingdom motif of God's people in God's place enjoying God's rule and blessing. And all who are united to Christ by faith experience these kingdom realities as He lives them out for us, in us, and through us.

Where Adam and Israel failed, Jesus succeeds and becomes the perfect Adam and the true Israel. He is the promised son of Abraham and David. He is the everlasting Temple; we enter through Him into the presence of God and there we experience unrestricted fellowship with Him. Christ alone is the unending, all-sufficient source of every blessing God bestows to His people.
